My work at the International Diabetes Federation opened my eyes to the many challenges faced by people with diabetes across the world, especially in low-income countries. An important focus of my current work is to support diabetes projects and to train and mentor diabetes specialists in different countries. This page describes some of my current projects.
Bermuda - Diabetes Rewind
The Bermuda Diabetes Rewind programme was launched in 2022 in partnership with the Bermuda Diabetes Association and Argus Insurance. It is available free of charge to clients of Argus, and over 12 months supports people with type 2 diabetes and prediabetes to make lifestyle changes towards achieving remission of their condition.
Kenya - Diabetes Reversal Programme
The Kenya Diabetes Reversal programme was launched in 2021 in partnership with Afyacode. this followed a successful pilot that showed that a low carbohydrate approach is effective in helping people achieve remission of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes
Life For a Child
Life for a Child (LFAC) exists – and will continue to exist – until no child dies of diabetes for want of a timely diagnosis, suitable treatment, or ongoing care. LFAC provides insulin and essential supplies to 34000 children and young people with type 1 diabetes in 44 countries worldwide, when insulin may otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable. I work as a volunteer consultant to the programme, and have made site visits to centres in Kenya and Ghana.
Health Professional Training
Together with local colleagues, I have delivered virtual training to health professionals from many countries, including Bermuda, Indonesia, Australia and Kenya. The training is adapted from the Low Carb Course that is also available for UK professionals.
